With autumn weather and foliage making its rounds, I needed a day in Hudson NY. I took the scenic route on the Taconic to Columbia County with two intentions, grab lunch at Little Rico and walk the grounds of Olana Historic Site, but Hudson had other plans.

Warren St

I couldn’t help but park our car at the start of Warren Street, because it gave me a peek of what the strip had in store. The street is lined up with Federal and Greek Revival buildings that tells you to take your time.

The Spotty Dog Books & Ale

Further down the block, we found the Spotty Dog, a restored firehouse turned bookstore and alehouse where you can enjoy a drink and good read. The dalmatian reference? Adorable.

Where to eat at Hudson NY?

Lunch at Little Rico

We finally reached Little Rico, a Dominican- Puerto Rican and LGBTQ owned spot that was the perfect sprinkle of sazon for the little town. I built my plate with my favorite quick meal: fried egg over rice with a side of maduros and bacon, topped with guacamole. My hungry husband built his own burrito with sofrito chicken, rice, cheese and avocado.

West Indies Natural Foods

Little Rico wasn’t the only Caribbean owned establishment.

At West Indies Natural Foods you’ll find beef patties, oxtail stews, jerk chicken and pineapple soda to go with.

Cozy Lunch at Taiga Restaurant

We were tempted to go for a second meal at Taiga. The outdoor seating was giving “stay cozy and warm” while enjoying the fresh air. Honestly, I don’t think there was a single restaurant without thoughtfully designed outdoor seating for the season.

What’s to see at Hudson NY?

Hudson Open Studios & Maryna Bilak

The real surprise came when we stumbled upon Hudson Open Studios. Hudson is filled with art studios, and it wasn’t just the visuals. It was also emotional. You’ll meet artists who are open to sharing their inspiration if you ask. We met Maryna Bilak, whose work was inspired by her journey as a caretaker for mother-in-law who had Alzheimer’s. Yes, she is just as maternal as you’d imagine after seeing her art. I appreciate her sharing her work and experience with us.  

Olana Historic Site

After spending most of the day in downtown Hudson, we finally took a quick peek at the Olana Historic Site an hour before it closed. And it didn’t disappoint. On our drive up, I watched people walk the grounds, stop in awe staring at the estate that sat on top of the hill, and others enjoy a picnic date. At the top, there were scenic views in every corner, and the unique architecture and design of the house left you puzzled until you google it. I’m glad we still stopped by before I our drive home.

Boutique hotels for a cozy weekend in Hudson NY

On our way back home, I immediately thought this trip wasn’t long enough. You definitely need more than a few hours or even a day to enjoy Hudson and all that it has to offer. Along the strip, we came across two boutique hotels, The Hudson Whaler and The Maker (not photographed).

I’m already making plans to spend the weekend for some breakfast in bed and taking my time exploring the town.

We took the local route, Route 9G to Route 9, on our way back home. Next stop is Rhinebeck and Hyde Park.
